Relay plans taking shape

SOUTHERN Downs’ residents have thrown their support behind Warwick’s first Relay for Life event with more than $8000 already in the kitty.

Relay For Life is an 18-hour event involving teams of up to 15 people who keep a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run overnight.
Relay for Life Southern Downs co-ordinator, Jo Capp, said a team captains’ meeting will take place at the Warwick Library on Tuesday, 30 July, at 5:30pm.
“The meeting has been called for all those people interested in forming a relay team, joining a team or would like to know a bit more – all are welcome,” she said.
Ms Capp said Relay For Life is an opportunity for the community to get together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against a disease that takes too much.
Teams and small groups, backed by local businesses, will take part in the relay event at Risdon Oval Queen’s Park on September 7-8.
Warwick nurses team, Jackie’s Bunch, has so far taken a leading charge with more than $4000 raised through raffle tickets.
Ms Capp said this year’s Warwick Relay for Life was hoped to raise $25,000 to support all Queenslanders affected by cancer.
“The average number of people affected by invasive cancer each year in the Southern Downs region is 101,” she said.
“This year Warwick has adopted the ‘Rainbow’ theme to fight all cancers of all colours.”
Warwick has 11 teams registrated so far in this year’s event.
Team registration will be taken during the members’ meeting or teams can register online: www.relayforlife.org.au
