Buckle up for budget pain

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is under strict instructions to tighten its belt and find new sources of State or Federal funding for some local services, as the council’s 2014/15 budget looms.
However, as both State and Federal governments continue to slash spending, the mounting pressure could result in the loss of some services or a possible rate rise.
Southern Downs Regional Council’s business and community services director David Tuxford said council officers were currently working on building the 2014/15 budget and all staff members were busy analysing costs.
“Staff are currently identifying efficiencies to prepare a fair and equitable budget for the whole council area,” he said.
“As with all levels of government, the funding pool is finite and community members expect that high standard government services are delivered within the available funds.
“All council departments have been asked to find savings and to identify other funding sources (State and Federal funds) where appropriate.”
The Free Times asked Mr Tuxford whether ratepayers can expect an increase in their rates notices.
“There has been no decision about a rate rise, however councillors will be discussing this in the coming weeks,” he said.
