MORE than 100 eager orienteers were expected to compete at two State events being held on the Granite Belt this weekend.
With the national Championships in the ACT only a fortnight away, many Queensland orienteers will be looking for some top quality competition in the local terrain to round off their preparation for this major event.
A strong contingent of orienteers from the Northern Tablelands Orienteering Club, based in Armidale, is also expected to attend the event.
On Saturday afternoon, a middle distance event will be held in the Amiens Forest with eight courses on offer to cover the range of ages and abilities.
Organiser Eric Andrews, said that this complex granite area was rated one of the best and most challenging areas in Australia and was a real test of navigational skills.
“Although the courses are only relatively short, we still expect that winning times for the longest course of 4km to still be about one hour,” he said.
On Sunday the long distance event will be held on private grazing land at Dalveen with 12 courses on offer.
Mr Andrews said that local people interested in finding out more about the sport were also most welcome to come along and chat with experienced club members.
“Orienteering is a sport for all ages so we would particularly invite family groups to come along,” he said.
No special gear is required but people should wear sensible footwear and a hat and bring along a water bottle. Compasses can be borrowed at the event. The entry fee will be $5. For further information, please contact 4683 6374 or go to www.oq.asn.au/events.
