AFL superstar Jason Akermanis is coming to the Warwick Redbacks AFC Club this Saturday night for ‘Beers and Burgers’.

In order to make the event happen, Redbacks president Tyhe Clarkson said the club received a grant through Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) to bring the former Brisbane Lions player to the town.

“He’s also going to watch our home game on Saturday afternoon against Dalby beforehand,” Tyhe said.

However, the Redbacks faced a setback last Friday with flood water inundating the grounds – he said a group of people spent the weekend cleaning up.

“It happened so quickly and the water got up to the top step our clubhouse – it was very, very close,” Tyhe said.

“When the water receded, we had debris all over our field.

“We lost power for a couple of days since our power box was completely underwater, and the gas bottle was knocked onto its side.”

In spite of this, Tyhe said the club members have maintained a positive outlook.

“We missed out on a home game last weekend as a result of flooding, but this weekend’s going to be great,” he said.

“Akermanis is coming and one of our players, Nick Donges, will be celebrating the most games played by a Redbacks club member – 265 games played.”

The event this weekend starts at 6.00pm at the Redbacks’ clubhouse, and Tyhe said everyone is invited, AFL player or not.

“It’s $25 to enter, there’ll be a bar and a free burger, and Akermanis will be talking about his AFL experiences,” Tyhe said.
