District Pairs decided in delightful weather

What a difference a week makes. The finals of the Men’s District Pairs were played Saturday and Sunday in perfect weather and on a green running very well and as a result there was some great games.

On Saturday morning Rod Newlands and Jamie Zamprogno (The Summit) had a comfortable 25-17 win over Brad Smith and Gary Roberts (Inglewood and Goondiwindi).

Frank Taylor and Mick Mills (The Summit) proved too strong for John Graham and John Fairley (The Summit and Stanthorpe) winning 34-11.

Summit bowlers, Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert (The Summit) had a big win over Goondiwindi opponents Frank Woods and George Sloss. The final score 31 – 7

Michael O’Leary and Peter Gynther of Tannymorel continued their good recent form with a narrow 18-17 win over Darren Stanley and Rob Capelli

The semi finals followed on Saturday afternoon Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert had a 25-15 win over Frank Taylor and Mick Mills In second semi Rod Newlands and Jamie -Zamprogno just held on to beat Michael O’Leary and Peter Gynther 24-22. This was the game of the day with Rod and Jamie leading 22 to 11 after 13 ends. Michael and Peter fought back to trail by 23 – 22 coming into the final end. They held shot until the final few bowls in what was a thrilling finish.

Because both finalists were from The Summit the final was played at The Summit on Sunday. Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert led 14-6 after 13 ends. Their opponents Rod Capelli and Jamie Zamprogno lifted their game to trail 14-12 after 17 ends. The final four ends were keenly contested with all bowlers playing great conversion shots Sutherland and Schubert managed to play the shots that hurt and scored a single shot on each of these ends to take out the District pairs 18 – 12. Congratulations to the winners who played consistently all weekend and Rod and Jamie who were worthy runners up.

The club would like to thank Mick, Frank, Graeme and Peter for the work done to present the greens in such wonderful condition. Thanks to Graeme for umpiring and District President Bryce for umpiring and presenting the badges on Sunday.

The ladies also did a great job catering for everyone. Social bowls were played on Saturday. In Game one Margaret Harvey, Rocky Thompson and Dale Callaghan defeated Sylean Fairley, John Fairley and Ray Spiller22-12

In Game two Artie Zamprogno, Elana Scott and Brian Wilmot proved too strong for Todd Jones, Barry Murphy and Cliff Jones – the score 33-7.

Game three saw Adrian Jackson, Keith Mungall and John Cook defeat Brian Brown, Phil Davis and Paul Zamprogno 22-11. Great to see Todd Jones having his first game.

This Saturday (5 September) First Division Pennants – Southern Cross – Social Bowls at the Summit

Sunday (6 September) Final First Division Pennant – Second Division Pennant – The Summit.
