Stunning victory

It was the opposition who were stunned when Steve Hawthorn served up a fifa as Stunned Mullets reeled in the IGA Australia Day Cricket Carnival Trophy. Stunned Mullets clocked up their third victory in 15 appearances at the popular carnival with a win over Maryvale Condy.
The winning side was captained by Troy Welsh who has lined up on each occasion for the Mullets. He made the trip from Yeppoon while another carnival regular Dean Butler returned from Cairns to take up his spot in the side. It was no surprise that Hawthorn picked up the award for the Most Wickets (9) over the weekend. Another of their bowlers, Rod Hansen, was among the award winners topping the Bowling Averages with 3.6.
Brendan Iles playing for Badzy’s Bandits put his name into the record books as the first player to score a century under the T20 format. His ton came off only 63 balls and he remained unbeaten on 101. In a fitting end to the carnival for Iles, he was named All Rounder of the carnival with 136 runs and five wickets.
Carnival co-ordinator Col O’Brien (who took a hat trick himself) said the Australia Day Carnival was once again a great success. “The T20 format seems to work well,” O’Brien said. “Players can set up at one ground and know they don’t have to travel throughout the day.
“We could not have wished for better weather and the games have been played in great spirit. We have reintroduced one of the favourite events, the throwing competition, and Greg Louis was today’s winner.” O’Brien said the organisers were already working on plans for next year’s three-day carnival.
