Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) moved a motion to approve the disposal of land in Wallangarra at the recent Ordinary Council Meeting.

SDRC is the owner of a freehold parcel of vacant land located at Merawa Street, Wallangarra. The land is 2,023m2 and is zoned as Township.

The land was transferred to Stanthorpe Shire Council’s possession in 1999.

A report was presented to SDRC on 26 May 2021 as part of the review of Council-owned land and this parcel of land was included in that review.

The tender to dispose of various parcels of Council land was advertised in October 2021. There were no offers received for this land at that time.

In May 2022, an offer of $26,500 was received to purchase the land.

SDRC received an independent valuation for the land in January 2021, which was $25,300.

The proposed purchaser is waiting on a quotation for private works from SDRC to connect to the CED system in Wallangarra.

The proposed purchaser would like to consider this quote prior to entering into the contract of sale. The sale is not subject to finance or any other conditions.

The proposed purchaser intends to construct a dwelling on the property.

The motion was successfully moved by Cr Andrew Gale and seconded by Cr Sheryl Windle.

Cr Jo McNally spoke up after the motion had passed to note there may be a resolution in place about how the money should be used.

“I believe there’s still a resolution on the books that any excess land that Council is to sell is to pay down our debt,” she said.

The Mayor requested the Chief Executive take that on board.
