Last Friday, World War I medals once belonging to Captain William Montague ‘Mont’ Cory were officially displayed at Warwick RSL.

Mont was an ancestor of the Cory family and the medals were donated to the Warwick Sub-Branch by David, Margot and Ben on 12 April.

The medals on display are a Military Cross with Bar (awarded in 1917, bar added in 1918), a British War Medal, a Victory Medal, and a 1914 to 1918 Medal.

Warwick RSL historian John Telfer was responsible for organising the display on behalf of the RSL, and he said the medals will be kept safe.

“There wouldn’t be too many displays in RSL’s around Australia that have a Military Cross,” John said.

“It’s such a highly decorated thing that families wouldn’t donate them – they’d keep it within the family.”

However, John said that the Cory’s would like to ensure the awards are kept protected and safe, which the RSL is promising.

“Mont was awarded for his gallantry and outstanding duty in the French Campaign in Belgium,” he said.

John is notable for researching and writing historical pieces about past locals, including Captain William Montague ‘Mont’ Cory.

This was published in the 21 April edition of Warwick Today and Stanthorpe Today in honour of Anzac Day.

Anyone interested in seeing the medals in person can visit Warwick RSL on 65 Albion Street.
