Local celebrates impressive birthday milestone

Churches of Christ resident Avon Hayes celebrated her 103rd birthday on 6 April, an impressive number of years that has been filled with lots of life.

Avon was born in Warwick and grew up on the land with her parents.

She also has a twin sister who lives in Canada and although the two have been separated throughout their lives, the sisters have a close relationship.

After finishing school at age 15, she spent several years helping out on the farm where she met and married her husband.

The pair had two children, Donna and Paul, and the family continued to live in the country and run a property.

Avon’s celebration last month involved catching up with family, hanging out at the cafe, and if not for the wet weather, would have involved a horse and carriage ride.

But nonetheless, the jam-packed day was a special one – it’s not everyday someone turns 103.

Avon’s list of interests over the past 40 years range from watching movies, going to concerts (she particularly enjoys Andre Renu), and trying out different hobbies.

“I’m not 162 for nothing,” Avon said cheekily of the wide range of films she’s seen.

Here’s to Avon – a long life lived and will continue to live.
