Southern Downs Regional Council is currently investigating a wastewater spill into the Condamine River which occurred at the Fitzroy Street pump station in Warwick today.
During the recent rainfall and flooding events, some pump stations in the Warwick area have been unable to cope with the increased inflow, which has resulted in a wastewater overflow at Fitzroy Street.
Council is following its overflow response procedures including notifying the Department of Environmental Services.
Council will work with them to monitor water quality to ensure public safety.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Cr Vic Pennisi said that officers have responded promptly and proactively to resolve the issue.
“These are exceptional circumstances and we will continue to investigate until we know the full extent of the situation,” Cr Pennisi said.
“In the meantime, I urge residents not to take any risks and avoid entering or playing in floodwaters.”
Council will notify the community when the Condamine River is returned to its normal condition following water quality testing but until then, Council advises residents not to swim or fish in the water until further notice.
