Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) are set to upgrade the change rooms at Allora and Killarney swimming pools.

SDRC called out earlier this month for a suitably experienced and licenced building company to carry out the entirety of works associated with the upgrades to the change rooms located at Raff St, Allora and Willow St, Killarney respectively.

SDRC also approved the installation of solar systems at the Allora and Killarney Swimming Pools late last year.

It was stated at the time that historically, the pools have been a significant drain on Council resources regarding operating and maintenance costs.

It was expected that the installation of the solar system would reduce overall costs.

An SDRC spokesperson confirmed earlier this year that the solar systems would be installed when the pools closed for winter.

The Killarney pool was built by a team of locals in the late 1930s and was opened in November 1940.

It was originally filled out of the creek every week.

A Council spokesperson stated that the Allora and Killarney public pools are currently closed for the winter months.

“During the closure, the change rooms will be refurbished,” they said.

“The works will include disabled toilet blocks within both facilities to ensure inclusivity within the region.”

The spokesperson stated that tenders for these works are currently under review.

The pools are scheduled to reopen on 1 October.

The spokesperson did not provide any new details on the installation of solar systems at the pools.
