Fingerlings released into Severn catchment

Following the drought which depleted stocks of fishing in the Severn River and tributaries, the Stanthorpe Blue Water Fishing & Re-stocking Club made an approach to Southern Downs Regional Council for financial assistance to purchase fingerlings to release into the Severn catchment.

After the fishing club contributed $2000 and Southern Downs Regional Council matched this amount with $3000, they were able to purchase 1300 Murray Cod, 15,000 Golden Perch, and 3370 Silver Perch, and the fingerlings were able to be released as far down as Ballandean and up as far as Cannon Creek.

The State Government only fund the restocking of impoundments for which a licence is required to fish whereas fishing in streams is free and can be enjoyed by all.

The contribution freshwater fishing makes to the community is underestimated. Apart from tourism, the social family value of dad going fishing with the kids creates memories that last a lifetime and becomes a generational event within families.

The Fishing Club thanks Southern Downs Regional Council for the support they have shown, in particular, Mayor Vic Pennisi for his encouragement during this process.

Storm King Dam restocking will occur in the coming couple of weeks.
