After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft makes their way back as the lead event for Southern Downs community reconnection.

From October 25th to 31st, Warwick Showgrounds at 18 Kingsford St hosts Australia’s most famous rodeo, campdraft and live entertainment. Events and Marketing Coordinator Teilah Mckelvey says she is ready to bring back one of the most significant events in the region.

“Last year was the first time we’ve had to cancel the event since there’s been a war. So it’s great for us to get back as a community to reconnect and enjoy the sport,” Ms Mckelvey says.

“We are expecting a great public. Our rodeo brings in around $6 million a year for the local economy. So, we’re hoping that we can bring that back again this year because COVID-19 clearly hit the town.”

Visiting Warwick Showgrounds on Tuesday, former Broncos and Origin star Shane Webcke celebrated being a spokesman for the event.

“This event is like a festival, and that’s what this is. So there will be plenty for the kids and plenty of hospitality in terms of food, drink and all of those things. So I understand how the rodeo works for the local economy,” Mr Webcke said.

Kerry Turner, who in 2019 was the first female to take home Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft in decades, affirmed that last year’s disappointment would give way to a bigger and better event than it was before.

“The rodeo brings many people to town and a lot of camp practice from all over our country. This year, we expect a lot of money counting in the city. It supports our town because we love being here,” Ms Turner said.

Warwick Gold Cup attracts more riders and offers more prize money than any other campdraft in Australia: over $62,000 plus a gold cup and a trophy saddle.

Dorothy Jephcott, president of Warwick Show and Rodeo Society, affirms that at least 10,000 visitors are expected for the festival.

“Hopefully, COVID-19 will stay away, so everyone can get out and enjoy themselves and have a good time as all health precautions are being taken,” Ms Jephcott said.
