This week’s Q&A subject is new owner of Downs Heating, Cooling and Outdoors on Grafton Street GARY ZERNER. Gary has lived in Warwick for 23 years, and took over the business with his wife Kim earlier this year. Here’s what he had to say in this week’s Q&A:
Q. When did you take over Downs Heating, Cooling and Outdoors and what were you doing prior?
A. February 2021. I was National Business Development Manager for our family’s company, AgSolutions, which was soil and livestock nutrition.
Q. What do you love most about your job?
A. Being our own bosses and being surrounded by a positive team.
Q. What is your most popular product and your most popular service?
A. Wood heater spare parts, that’s the online part of our business. We send products all over Australia and we also export to six countries. And probably more recently is our Kings camping gear which is new. So in recent weeks, our Kings camping gear has become quite popular.
Q. How do you relax after a long day?
A. A rum and dry and a bit of tele, watch the footy.
Q. What’s something people may not know about you?
A. I represented Queensland in cattle judging when I was younger, and placed fourth in the nationals.
Q. If you could spend 24 hours anywhere, any year, where would you choose?
A. On the snowfields.
Q. What is something you can’t live without?
A. Coffee. (Maybe I should say my wife.)
Q. What would your last meal on earth be?
A. Steak and chips.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
A. Go the extra mile and take advantage of every opportunity. Always look into something. What you put in, you get out.
Q. How would you spend a lottery win?
A. A beef property and a unit at the coast.
