A likely record was set at this week’s Warwick sheep sale for a consignment of lambs from a single vendor.
The Stensmith family of ‘Shannonvale’ at Aramac, north of Barcaldine, sent 1200 very well-conditioned White Dorper lambs to Warwick, with TopX agent George McVeigh describing them as “superb”.
The grain-fed lambs arrived late yesterday, Tuesday 9 October and TopX drafted them by weight through the yards this morning.
Aged generally between five and eight months their average weight was around the 35 kilogram mark.
The majority of the lambs were sired by White Dorper rams bred by David and Robbie Curtis of Bellevue Grazing Co at Millmerran – who took out several awards just last weekend at the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society Prime Lamb Carcass competition.
The Stensmiths have been using Bellevue rams for the past three years.
George McVeigh told the Free Times it was “great to see quality in such numbers” at Warwick, Queensland’s only sheep selling centre.
“Good quality lambs will always sell well but a consignment this size from a single vendor is great for our Saleyards,” he said.
